Perfect Shows to Binge Watch When You’re in the Mood for Some Girl Power
After a long week of work, drinks with friends, coffee dates, laundry, workouts, bills, dishes, period pains and all other things that make Friday night seem like Christmas Eve and your birthday combined sometimes, few things beats grabbing your favorite snack (or bottle of wine) and hitting the couch hard for some serious ‘me time’. What better way to spend your girls night in than while watching some seriously talented female actresses kick ass on screen? We’ve created a list of our favorite Girl Power TV-series with amazing female leads; whether you’re in the mood to laugh, cry, cringe or lose your breath, there’s something for you on this list – get your old pj’s on and enjoy.
Du-uh. A show based on the life of ultimate #girlboss Sophia Amoruso? Yes, please! We waited for it, we watched it, and now we’re just waiting to watch it again. To be honest, it’s worth binging on more for the story than the actual show, and if you’ve read the bestselling book (#girlboss) that the show is based on (like we have multiple times) it’s even more fun! It’s the ideal show for a Sunday night prep for the week ahead- or when you feel discouraged, demotivated, hungover or like you “just can’t” because after watching GIRLBOSS you definitely can.
Orange Is The New Black
If you haven’t started watching the show yet, make sure you set aside some time as there are 5 seasons available on Netflix. The show is about a female prison, it’s prisoners and addresses topics such as cultural differences, sexuality and mental illness. Throughout the series, we primarily get to know the leading role Piper, but also the other women in the series; going back and forth between the past and present to let us in on the backstories of each prisoner. We guarantee it will make you laugh, cry, cover your eyes, think about things you’ve never thought about before and feel things you’ve felt, an you’ll love it.
Big Little Lies
If you haven’t already binge watched the first series yet (what have you been doing?), now is a good time to start in time for the second season. The show is about the mysterious lives of five women living in Monterey, California, and we get to ride along for a psychologically twisted journey of domestic abuse, adultery and the dark side of the seemingly perfect lives of these women. We’re no film experts, but there is something about this series that’s different, in a way that makes it impossible to stop watching once you start.
Yes, we know the show finished last year, but it will be our forever ‘guilty-pleasure-go-to-series’. If you haven’t yet watched Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow’s GIRLS yet, you absolutely need to- like now. The series follows four girlfriends with distinctly different personalities trying to make it in NYC; not in a glossy SATC way, but in a beautiful, ugly, perfectly imperfect real kind of way that will make you laugh, cringe and cry. What can we say, from a (very biased) Lena Dunham- worshipping point of view, it’s pretty much the perfect TV- show.
With the talented Gillian Jacobs in the female lead role with goofy Paul Rust by her side, this quirky Netflix series about a couple of twenty-somethings trying to make their dysfunctional lives make up a functional relationship is one of our absolute favorites. Not surprisingly, Judd Apatow (GIRLS) is one of the brains behind this quirky, relatable and cringe-worthy show and we literally can’t stop watching.
